I've been in two scenarios recently as a customer, when I received an unexpected freebie. Right after ordering my bagel and coffee at the Bagel Bar, the girl behind the cashier offered me a bottle of mineral water for free. I was about to ask for a glass of water anyway, so this came as a welcome surprise.
A few days later, I went buying a steak at the meat section in my nearby supermarket. I was chatting with the guy at the cashier about the fact that there didn't seem to be too much meat for so much money.
He obviously took pity on my miserable face when he said - "Tell you what sir, why don't you have this other steak for the same price" and he added an extra steak on top!
So what do we learn here? The lesson is that nearly all customers love a freebie and if they receive one from a supplier it creates a positive relationship. When people buy stuff at your online business, on the download section, give them unadvertised freebies and they will love you for that.
As customers, we're more likely to return and do business with people who give us freebies and we're more likely to tell other people about our positive experience. It's good technique to give your customers freebies at times but don't over do it. If you blast your email database with gifts on daily basis you are going to miss the target and your internet marketing business is going to suffer for it..
I once read a story article about a restaurant owner who would at times give people a free meal. At the time when a group of diners or a family called for the bill he would suddenly announce that on this occasion they were his guests and they didn't have to pay for their meal.
